The information covered throughout the Safetor website has been obtained through hours of research and fact based knowledge.

Research:

Finding the right type of steel that will stand up to the stress due to fall-arrest and not create a hazard is a must, that is why we here at Collins Corporation Ltd. spend a lot of time researching and testing steel types and coatings before we start manufacturing height safety anchor points.

Testing:

We engaged the services of Telarc registered Material Testing Laboratory and Jason Myburgh of Quality Safety Limited (QSI) to ensure that our products were optimized with both static and dynamic testing.

Material Testing Laboratory static load tested different types of steel for us to note the effects. Because we were static testing, we tested the anchors to 15kN, stop the test, release the load, and reloaded the anchor to breaking / yield.

Standards & Building Codes:

Unlike so many other height safety anchors, Safetor Height Safety Anchors that come into contact with other building products won’t seriously affect their compliance to the standards or invalidate building codes that they are compliant to.

Safetor Roof Anchors tests are all designed by Collins Corporation Ltd. and all tests carried out are to AS/NZS 5532.2013 Standards: Manufacturing Requirements for single anchor point device use for harness-based work at height.

Environmental Powder Coating:

Safetor Height Safety Anchors are suited to many harsh environmental conditions due to the thermoplastic powder coating we use; our products can stand up to whatever the environment can throw at them.

Plascoat PPA 571 ES is a thermoplastic coating powder which has been specifically designed to provide a long lasting, tough coating for exterior applications to mild steel.

Plascoat PPA 571 ES is resistant to stress cracking, adverse weather conditions, detergents, salt spray and typical airborne pollutants. The coating maintains excellent adhesion to the metal substrate without the need for a separate primer. The material also provides good abrasion and impact resistance.

Materials:

We use 300 grade Mild Steel because it does not become brittle when it bends and can also work well in low temperatures, unlike tensile steels like Stainless Steel and higher grade mild steel. Safetor anchors have been designed to bend under loading and absorb energy to reduce the full loading on the structures if a fall were to occur.

Legislation:

New legislation covering workplace health and safety came in April 2018 as a result of the Pike River Mine disaster. It replaces the Health and Safety in Employment Act which had been in effect for over 20 years.

The New Act

The new Act more clearly identifies the responsibilities of duty holders, provides jail sentences and increases fines up to $600,000. These should act as incentives for all duty holders, particularly for owner and operators of businesses including chief executives. It is a real opportunity for business owners and other duty holders to review health and safety in their places of work to ensure they meet their responsibilities thus avoiding hefty consequences.

Putting Safety First

At Collins Corporation we put safety ahead of profit and are genuinely concerned for the safety of those places to which we supply products. We manufacture and provide approved safety equipment such as roof anchors to the construction industry. The construction industry continues to be in New Zealands top five in the number of fatality and accidents recorded each year. Proportionally we have one of the worst records in the western world. A large percentage of those statistics arise from falls from heights over 3 metres.

Take Action Now!

Often duty holders do not take action to prevent such falls until after the event.

This needs to change.

Many people install roof anchors into existing buildings. While this is good in cases where no protection has been previously provided, it makes far more sense and is a lot cheaper if roof anchors are incorporated into the design in the first place. This is something that owners, builders and architects need to liaise over right from the beginning.
